WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL HELMET AWARENESS DAY?
It is the creation of Riders4Helmets. Riders4Helmets was founded in early 2010 after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident. King Dye, who remained in a coma for a month following her accident, was not wearing a helmet at the time and is still undergoing rehabilitation.
The week of June 9th, helmet education is strongly promoted and you can even sign up for live webinars with Courtney King Dye, Darren Chiacchia and other great helmet and safety spokespeople. Retailers are also participating and those that are listed on the Helmet Awareness Day website will be offering a one time special discount to their customers. In recognition of Helmet Awareness, Barn Discounts, operated by Healing Horses Sanctuary, is offering extreme discounts on all of their riding helmets.
HELMET SAFETY, CONCUSSION & INJURY INFORMATION
HCBC and Equutrails strongly encourages everyone to take a look at the following information:
While we here at Equutrails do our utmost to do everything possible to make sure that our horses are well trained and well behaved at all times there is always a 1% chance that something untoward could possibly happen. Incidents such as a rider losing his or her balance while viewing the scenery or a run in with a bear is possible as we do ride in wilderness areas. While we have been extremely fortunate to have never had any major incidents, there is always a risk. In BC, riding helmets are not mandatory for adults riding horses, however, we do encourage that you wear a helmet for your own safety, even if you have riding experience. As most people don’t have an equestrian helmet, a cycling helmet will provide you with the same protection. Bring your cycling helmets. If you do not have a riding helmet, we do have helmets available for a $3 rental fee.
No Horse is 100% Safe. We wish you all safe riding.
